Today is national let it go day. A time to let go of whatever is bugging you. Sometimes we tend to hang onto things that are not worth hanging onto — bitterness, anger, worldly possessions. In celebration of “letting it go day” why not resolve to hand over those things to God and let Him deal with them.

When we do that, He is always faithful to fill up those empty hands with things that are worth hanging onto. For example, Jesus.

Today is official kick off to the summer season. Many of you will be planning road trips and vacations with the family or maybe just yourself and friends. New Life Praise will be sure to say a prayer for traveling mercies.

Harvest time always serves to remind me of the blessings and provision of the Lord, when the earth yields her fruits after the farmer sweats and toils to hold back the curse of Adam.

I’d like to thank the many hard working Georgians that make all this possible. The other day I stopped by a local peach orchard and the smell of freshly picked fruit made my mouth water, and even better than the smell is the experience of partaking in the fresh fruit. You are not going to get this sort of experience in the grocery store!

One of my favorite summer time treats is grilled peaches with vanilla ice cream. I encourage you to support your local farmer and enjoy some awesome summer flavors!

LOL! This past Saturday (with temps in the 100s) I got the bright idea to take my kids to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. I figured it would be a cool thing to do on such a hot day.

To save some gas and traffic fustration, I figured we could park at the airport and take MARTA to the Aquarium. According the the Aquarium website, Five Points was the closest station with about a 10 min walk. Okay. I’m still trying to get familear with Atlanta, so we got off at Five Points and then took a wrong turn and ended up walking for a half hour over to the CNN plaza, where by the way is another MARTA stop going east/west. Anywho, just a short walk from there through Olympic Park. Needless to say all of us were sweaty and sunburned at this point.

On the way back, my car overheated and a intake gasket blew. When stuff like this happens on a busy hot day when you are tired and the kids are complaining you are tempted to just get angry at God. But instead of getting angry over situations like these we should try to find God in the situation.

By the grace of God we did not conk out in Atlanta and when the car finally became to hot to drive we were forced to stop not one mile from where we would end up getting the vehicle repaired by some good reputable folks.

It’s amazing to see how God takes care of our problems and times things out before we even are aware of what is going on. Like that Steven Curtis Chapman song we can all see the finger prints of God in our situations.

An elderly lady in Washington State lived a very frugal life, she cut her own hair, chopped her own firewood, and even used an old zipper from a coat as shoe laces. But what surprised the people that knew her was that she was sitting on a 4.5 million fortune. What’s even more surprising is that she donated all that money back to her town so they could install a community pool for the kids, and set up scholarship funds. According to news reports…she didn’t want any recognition for her charity, and didn’t even want a funeral or obituary.

Verna Oller definately lived out the Biblical concept of “more blessed to give than to receive.” And I know the folks who support New Life FM live out that concept as well. We are so blessed to be blessed by giving people. Thank you so much!

Today is national “put that in your pipe and smoke it day — a day to remember as many outdated and corny expressions as possible. Here are a few to get you started. 

• See you in the funny papers.
• That’s the way the cookie crumbles.
• I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck.
• Look what the cat dragged in!
• I’m too pooped to pop.
• It isn’t worth a plug nickel.
• Someone put a bug in my ear.

You could probably come up a bunch more that are funnier. There are plenty of expressions or sayings that at first glance may sound corny or foolish, but I can’t help but imagine that many of the “expressions” or “sayings” in Christianity may sound foolish to the world too.

How about “you must be born-again.” Or “call upon the name of Jesus and you will be saved.” The scriptures warn us that the world will see our faith as foolishness, but to those who truly understand the meaning behind the saying, our faith is the beginning of wisdom.

If you know someone who may be perplexed by some of the perceived “corny” or “foolish” sayings we Christians may utter from time to time, take time to explain the meaning!

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.  — 1 John 5:14-15

My youngest daughter is now learning how to walk. Like all toddlers she will pull herself up using the couch or table and then take one or two steps, then lose confidence and resort to crawling. However, when I hold her hands her confidence returns and she takes off running. But as soon as you let go, its back to crawling.

As a father this gets fustrating at times because I know she can do it, she just doesn’t believe she can. I even try to tell her that as she ventures out on her own, that if she is about to fall I’ll catch her. But even with me right behind her she just doesn’t have the confidence to walk.

I wonder at times if God has those same fustrations. He knows we can walk right along side of Him, but sometimes we just lack the confidence to take those first steps of faith. And even though God promises to catch us if we fall, even then we doubt Him.

 Let us walk with confidence! God is right beside us!

I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. – 1 Corinthians 1:10

Hey! On this day in history in 1928, Kraft Foods introduced Velveeta Cheese! I have fond memories of grilled cheese sandwiches made with Velveeta and eating those sandwiches with tomato soup. We also used it to make home made macaroni and cheese.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Thank you so much for the continual sacrifice of our men and women in the armed services. And for those who have served and gave their lives in service of this great country. May we remember you and honor you each and every day of the year.

This weekend got me thinking about our freedom. In all of history, never has a greater nation existed on the principals and freedoms we enjoy today. Freedoms our founding fathers based on principals found in the Holy Scriptures. Yet this freedom requires a continual sacrifice of blood. Blood shed by our men and women in uniform on the battlefield. It requires constant vigilance less evil persons are allowed to take our freedom away. It requires the hard work and the paying of taxes to keep our freedoms “funded” in a sense. In short, this freedom we enjoy takes lots of work and sacrifice and we gladly give of ourselves to enjoy it and insure it for future generations!

But I was thinking over the weekend that this freedom is the best that man could conjure in history to date. Yet we still die, we still face hunger, wants, financial insecurity, and it does not grant us eternal life with God. Is all this work for naught? While our freedoms and rights are well worth the toil and sacrifice, true freedom does not require that type of sacrifice.

True freedom cannot be fought for, paid for with our blood or purchased with our tax dollars. Neither can it be taken away by some evil dictator or enemy force. This true freedom was purchased for us by the blood of Jesus, only He can grant this freedom and once accepted it can never be taken away.

Like the freedom found in this country, True freedom does not garuntee financial wealth, or health. What it does garuntee though is eternal peace and life with Jesus. It garuntees that no matter what happens to you in this life you have an advocate with the heavenly father. It gives you access to the One who makes all things possible. It makes you His child, it brings you into His family.

And all we have to do is believe and accept the sacrifice of Jesus who paid the debt for our sins and conquered death. That’s it. And once we do that He will transform your life! He will give you a new life.
